Who We Are
The Ottawa Glassblowing Co-op (OGC) is a non-profit, co-operative glass arts facility founded in May 2019. Our mandate is to foster a glassblowing co-operative that operates inclusively to support the artistic creativity, learning and growth of its members and to engage and educate the community in the art of glass.
We offer classes in glassblowing, for ages 15+, and encourage our students to further their exploration of glass as a form of creative expression.
Member artists work independently out of our studio on their own individual projects and businesses. We support all kinds of community-building activities in the studio including social events, member meet-ups, fundraisers and more.
Who You Are
Glass artist passionate about teaching and leading members and the public with a wide variety of skill sets and backgrounds to explore glass as a medium. You are building a career that lets you flex some strong entrepreneurial muscle, and you know that what you do makes a difference. You have an inherent desire to engage with members, create clarity through communications and are excited about introducing beginners to the art of glass. You recognize that the safety of both students and co-op members is important and are willing to follow current OGC COVID-19 policies.
Reporting to the Chair of the OGC Board of Directors, the OGC has a 6-8 week contract position as a Glassblowing Instructor to lead the Make your Own series of classes with the possibility of renewal for a 1-2 year term.
Status: part-time contract position (15 to 20 hours per week)
Dates: September 3, 2022 to October 21, 2022
Hourly Rate: $30/hour
Key Duties
- Lead 1 - 2 hr classes (max 5 students) following an established curriculum
- classes include: ornaments, pumpkins, terrariums and paperweights
- utilize our foot pedal operated, compressed air inflation system
- Prepare studio and supplies before hand and clean up after classes (sweep, store tools)
- Provide a short safety briefing for each class and ensure a safe working environment
- Follow the mandate and vision of OGC and promote the co-op where applicable
- Charge the furnace if needed after classes
- Perform the basic operations of an annealer
Qualifications·
- A Bachelor of Fine Arts in Glass with a minimum one year of glass studio operations experience or a 3-year diploma/background in Craft and Design with a specialty in Glassblowing combined with a minimum one year of glass studio operations experience or equivalent experience (must fully describe experience).
- Broad knowledge of glass blowing and cold working processes and equipment.
- Able to lift 50 lbs.
- Strong Communications skills
- Experience working in a Co-operative or non-profit organization preferred
