BEGINNERS SERIES: the path to becoming a renter
Thursday nights at the Ottawa Glassblowing Co-op are dedicated to our Beginner Glassblowing Series 1 and 2. Ten classes totalling over 30 hours of glassblowing training aim to help provide the foundations needed to get to a rental status in the hotshop.
Finishing the GB1 and GB2 series may not guarantee you will be ready to rent, but it will leave you with the best foundation possible to get you closer to this end goal.
All OGC renters must successfully pass safety and competence testing to ensure there are no liability concerns for all within the co-op. There are however many secondary tiers of training available to those who have made it through these beginner series courses.
This course will have students really practicing their skills and getting behind the bench more often. Prepare for demonstrations and drills as practice is an essential part of skill development. Focal lessons will be paired with some added tricks and tips.
Forms will range from plates to long necked vessels. Added techniques include: trails and lip wraps, handles and bits and solid colour application. Added training will be also provided in equipment, polishing and hotshop safety and etiquette. Students leaving this course should feel motivated and more independent.
*GB2 can also act as a great revision course for those who have been away from the hotshop for some time and want a bit of re-explained review and some added tips with a skilled instructor.
